Our summer camp for 2009 was held from Wednesday June 3 - Saturday June 6 at Savage Gulf. Scouts attending were Harrison H, William H, Hayden P, Graham P, Steven L, Bryce C, Garrett W, Andrew S, Blake S, Jared K, and Alexander H. Adults were Adrian, Travis W, and Brian C on June3-4. Phil P served as an extra driver for pick up.
On June 3, we met at the Stake Center at 12:00 and began our hike at about 1:00. We hiked from Stone Door to Sawmill Campsite, approximately 5.5 miles or 4 hours of hard hiking. The spring at this campsite was about .3 miles away but felt like forever away.
On June 4, we left Sawmill Campsite at 10:00 am and hiked the 1.6 miles or 2.5 hours uphill to the Stagecoach Campsite. Brian hiked back out to Stone door, a grueling day I am sure. It rained hard just about all day. Most everyone got wet. The spring at Stagecoach Campsite was pretty close but it was only running at a trickle, despite all the rain. We filtered our water from the puddles and tried to build a large enough fire to dry some of our clothing.
June 5, we left Stagecoach campsite at 12:30 and hiked the 7.2 miles or 4 hours to the Collins West Campsite. This hike, although longer was fairly level except for the last mile which was rough. The spring at this campsite was about .25 miles away and also running at only a trickle. We once again filtered our water.
June 6, we hiked .25 miles to the parking lot at the trail head and met Phil P at 10:30. We returned to the stake center at 12:30.
Everyone prepared their own foods and slept in a variety of methods ranging from expensive backpacking tents, to homemade tents, to hammocks with tarps. Total miles hiked with a back pack total a little over 14.5 miles for the 4 days.
